The Book Club is taking a break right now after completing our two final reads of the last season. Laurie Lee, As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning scored highly and was described as ‘evocative’, ‘nostalgic’, ‘raw’ and ‘brave’. Over the summer we all decided we might try to read an epic novel by Sir Walter Scott. We all knew the story of the Fair Maid of Perth but we had a discussion on Scott’s use of historical fact to inform his writing and decided we might all give him a go. We are choosing our own novel, trying to do something different for everyone and there is no pressure – just starting it or getting into it is enough! The Book Club is, at present, mainly ladies – men are all very welcome! -so we have decided to meet for the usual Ladies Lunch on August 13th. This is just to be sociable and we might chat a bit about Scott and our adventures in Scottish history then. The Book Club resumes on Tuesday 30th of September, the reading for that month will be announced soon.
